How often should you REALLY wash your clothes? (The honest answer)

How often should you REALLY wash your clothes? (The honest answer)

Let’s be real—nobody enjoys doing laundry. But at the same time, no one wants to be that person whose clothes give off an uninvited scent. So, how often do you really need to wash your clothes? Turns out, it depends on the item. Let’s break it down.

Every Wear

Some things are non-negotiable—they need to be washed after every single wear:

  • Socks & Underwear – No explanation needed.
  • Gym Clothes – Sweat + bacteria = a recipe for disaster. Wash after every use.
  • T-Shirts & Tank Tops – These absorb sweat and body oils, so wash them after one wear, especially in warmer months.

Every 2-3 Wears

Some clothes can go a couple of rounds before needing a wash:

  • Bras – Washing after 2-3 wears helps keep their shape while preventing buildup of sweat and oils.
  • Pajamas – If you shower before bed, you can get away with washing every 3 wears. Otherwise, every 1-2 wears is best.
  • Casual Shirts & Blouses – If you wear them for short periods and don’t sweat much, you can go 2-3 wears before tossing them in the laundry.

Every 4-5 Wears

  • Jeans & Denim Jackets – The golden rule: wash after 4-5 wears (or even longer if they’re not stained). Washing too often can cause denim to fade and wear out faster.
  • Sweaters (Worn with an Undershirt) – As long as you have a layer underneath, sweaters can last a few wears before needing a wash.
  • Dress Pants & Skirts – Unless you spill something, washing after 4-5 wears is enough.

Every Few Weeks or As Needed

  • Jackets & Coats – Outerwear doesn’t need constant washing. Spot clean as needed and do a full wash every month or two (depending on usage).
  • Hoodies & Sweatshirts – If worn over another layer, you can wash them every 5-7 wears.
  • Bedding – Sheets and pillowcases should be washed weekly, but blankets and comforters can go 1-2 months before a wash.

A Few Exceptions...

If you’ve been sweating more than usual, been around strong odors (like smoke or food), or just feel like your clothes need a refresh—trust your gut. Washing too often can wear out fabrics, but waiting too long isn’t ideal either. The key? Find a balance that keeps your clothes fresh and long-lasting.
